Showing Northern Irish women as they really are

They're always victims...there needs to be joy as well.

Creator and writer Lisa McGee laments the way women from Northern Ireland have historically been portrayed in film and television, noting that they're often either the worried girlfriend or the mourning widow of a more prominent male character. In contrast, the women McGee grew up with were independent, energetic and, above all, hilarious. Derry Girls is her love letter to those women.

Surrounding yourself with likeminded creatives

Find the people that share the same vision as you.

McGee's advice to those aspiring to write programmes of their own is, first and foremost, to build a community. With a team that shares a singular vision, your project has greater potential to reach new heights.
